About a year ago I was asked to be part of a live promotion for a new kind of Champagne. Champagne you ask? That’s right – the story is too weird to believe. I was hired to do what I thought was portrait drawings, but through a mis-communication the people who were organizing the event actually wanted a caricature artist. OOPS!
Let me pause the story for a second here…
What most people may not realize is that caricatures are actually quite a unique way to draw, and just because you are good at drawing cartoons, or good at drawing portraits does not necessarily mean that you will be good at drawing caricatures. Ok, back to the story…
Not being one to back down from the challenge of drawing something new and unique, the night went from bad to worse, as I had neither the correct tools, nor the technique to really create the stunning drawings that I, or my employer for the evening was hoping for. To make a long story short, I finished off the night with my tail between my legs, the high light of the night being my ‘manager’ chasing me around the event all night while I was trying to hide so that I wouldn’t have to do any more embarassing drawings.
As rough as that night was, I really believe that the best lessons come from failure, and that led me to ask:
Well, apparently that was a pretty loaded question, because there is actually quite a lot to a caricature, and behind what looks like a fairly simple drawing is actually a set of steps or a blueprint that almost anyone can follow to create their own hilarious cartoons.
The good news is that you won’t have to go through a potentially humiliating moment like I did with the caricature event. I’m going to show you the exact techniques and the same ‘blue print’ that professional caricature artists have been using for years to create artwork quickly and effortlessly, and even making a ton of money at the same time!
But before you find yourself cruising down the street in a new Ferarri paid for by your new found caricature skills, you’re going to need to get the insider knowledge to unlock the caricature artist that has been hiding inside of you!
